Sheet, Plate, Rod, Bar, Coil, Strip<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kovar<br>Kovar is an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy with a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of<br>hard (borosilicate) glass. This makes it especially suitable for uses which require a matched-expansion<br>seal between metal and glass parts. Thus kovar finds wide usage in the electronics industry for metal<br>parts bonded to hard glass envelopes for such devices as power tubes, x-ray tubes, etc., and other<br>applications requiring glass-to-metal seals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat Treatment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of its effect on the actual structure of the material, there is a distinction made between heat treating<br>the material to facilitate fabrication and heat treating the material to ensure optimum conditions for glass sealing,<br>plating or brazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress Relief Annealing<br>To relieve stress and work hardening of parts at intermediate stages of fabrication. It is intended particularly<br>for drawing, forming and spinning operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wash and degrease parts.<br>Anneal in atmosphere controlled furnace. Atmosphere may be wet or dry hydrogen, dissociated ammonia,<br>cracked gas or similar neutral atmosphere.<br>Annealing temperature is not critical; however, high temperatures (greater than 900 oC) or extended time<br>periods (longer than 60 minutes) should be avoided because such treatments promote grain growth.<br>Typical cycle: 850 oC for 30 minutes.<br>Parts should be held at temperature for the indicated time and then furnace cooled to less than 175 oC to<br>avoid oxidation and\/or thermal shock (which may cause distortion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat Treatment for Oxidation<br>Make sure that proper methods are used to clean, degrease and bright dip parts.<br>Oxidation &#8211; Heat treat in an electric air furnace to 850 oC to 900 oC until parts are cherry red (dull red heat).<br>The length of heat cycle is approximately 3 minutes, but due to differences in humidity and furnaces, the proper<br>cycle has to be varied. Then reduce heat approximately 10 oC per minute. When parts are cooled, oxide will be<br>formed. The oxide may appear from light grey to black in color. Black is normally considered to be over oxidation<br>and is not necessarily desirable for a good glass to metal seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Permalloy 80<br>Permalloy 80 is a highly magnetic nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy, with roughly 80% nickel and 15% iron<br>and 5% molybdenum content. It&#8217;s useful as a magnetic core material in electrical and electronic equipment.<br>Commercial permalloy alloys typically have relative permeability of around 100,000, compared to several<br>thousand for ordinary steel. It provides maximum magnetic permeabilities and minimal core losses at<br>low field strengths. This vacuum-melted product also offers the advantages of small size and weight in<br>magnetic core and shielding materials for the applications shown below. Other magnetic properties are<br>near zero magnetostriction, and significant anisotropic magnetoresistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Permalloy 80 provides high initial and maximum permeabilities with low coercive force, low hysteresis loss,<br>low eddy-current losses, and low magnetostriction, which is critical for industrial applications, allowing it to be<br>used in thin films where variable stresses would otherwise cause a large destructive variation in magnetic properties.<br>Typical applications for this material are:<br>Transformer laminations<br>Relays<br>Recording Heads<br>Deflection and Focusing Yokes<br>Amplifiers<br>Loudspeakers<br>Shielding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum magnetic properties of Permalloy 80 are best achieved by annealing for 4 hours at 1120oC to 1160oC<br>in a pure dry hydrogen atmosphere (-40oC dew point). Cooling in the 700oC to 300oC range at 3oC to 7oC per minute<br>is recommended. In order to retain the maximum properties this anneal should be done after all manufacturing of the<br>part is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MuMETAL \u00ae magnetic shielding alloy (mu metal grade ASTM A753 Alloy 4, UNS N14080, 80NiFe) is our most widely<br>known brand. Mu-Metal is a unoriented nickel-iron soft ferromagnetic alloy with very high permeability suitable for<br>sensitive electronic equipment shielding. It is used primarily in low intensity magnetizing fields (DC-100kHz) where<br>high attenuation is desired (high permeability &amp; high shielding efficiency). Mu-metal \u00ae offers exceptionally high initial<br>and maximum permeability with minimum hysteresis loss. It also has very low coercive force (Hc), very low core losses<br>and a low remanence (Br).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Available as stress annealed (soft annealed for ease of fabrication), or final annealed for maximum permeability.<br>Mu METAL\u00ae is used for fabricated shields such as enclosures, cylinders, cans, channels or 3D boxes. Final annealing<br>(Perfection Annealing) in a dry hydrogen atmosphere is required as a last processing step after all forming operations<br>(i.e. stamping, machining, bending, rolling or welding). The final annealing treatment is paramount to the magnetic<br>properties of Mumetal.
